'this wasn't just another hiring post...': zomato's deepinder goyal explains rs 20 lakh fee in latest post

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has ignited controversy after posting a unique job opening for a Chief of Staff role, offering no salary for the first year and requiring candidates to pay a fee of Rs 20 lakh. Goyal defended the unconventional posting, highlighting the significant learning opportunities and the chance to collaborate with top industry talent.

In a follow-up post on X (previously Twitter), Goyal said that Zomato had received over 18,000 applications for the position. He stated that the company would spend the next week examining the applications and reaching out to individuals who best met the organisation's requirements.

He wrote on X, "This wasn't just another hiring post. As some people pointed out, the "you have to pay us 20 lacs" was merely a filter, to find people who had the power to appreciate the opportunity of a fast track career, without getting bogged down by the constraints in front of them. We are going to reject most of the applications who have the money, or even talked about the money. We are going to find genuine intent and learning mindset from the sea of applications we have received."

Goyal also clarified that the requirement of a Rs 20 lakh fee was intended as a "filter" to attract candidates with the right mindset, one that values long-term learning and career development over immediate financial concerns.

Goyal added, "I really hope that "pay the company to get a job" doesn't become a norm in this world that's not cool. Money is an essential thing to keep people's lives running, and I believe in paying more than market rate, so that money doesn't come in the way of great work."

How Users Reacted to Deepinder Goyal’s 'Update 3' Post on the Zomato Chief of Staff Job Opening

"Why exactly did you need the 20L filter? Pretty sure there must be many out there who have the right intent but money would be a deterrent. So essentially you've filtered out most of India that isn't as privileged."

Another User on X said, "Nooooooo

You should have maintained character

This should have come after selecting the candidate"

Another user added, "Bro is cooking faster than most restaurants"

Not all reactions were negative, however. Some saw the posting as a unique learning opportunity.

"Great strategy @deepigoyal… applicants who trusted their guts are in for a win in all aspects 😇Chief of Staff Reporting Sir 🫡! May the best person get this awesome opportunity to learn, grow & achieve .. Good luck to all the applicants, " a user wrote.

Another wrote, "I'm glad that money thing was a filter. ❤️"
