Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed confidence in India’s ability to contribute to the pursuit of peace in the ongoing conflict with Russia. In an interview with ANI in Kyiv, Zelenskyy asserted that India has a crucial role to play in resolving what he described as a “war of one man”—referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin—against Ukraine.

“India is a large country with considerable influence. You have the power to halt Putin’s actions, disrupt his economy, and hold him accountable,” Zelenskyy stated, reflecting the sentiment of peace conveyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their recent meeting at the Mariinskyi Palace.

During their discussions, Prime Minister Modi reiterated that dialogue is the only viable solution to the conflict in Ukraine. “India has never been neutral; we have always stood on the side of peace,” Modi affirmed, adding that India is prepared to actively participate in efforts towards peace and progress.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s long-standing approach to peacebuilding, emphasizing the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. He reminded Zelenskyy of his previous conversations with President Putin, during which he had urged that military actions are not the answer and that diplomacy should take precedence.

“I want to assure you and the world that India remains committed to peace,” Modi said. “Both sides should engage in talks to find a resolution. I am ready to contribute personally to any peace effort, and as a friend, I offer India’s support.”

Zelenskyy also described Prime Minister Modi’s visit as a historic event, marking the first time an Indian leader had visited Ukraine since its independence. The visit, which took place on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, resulted in agreements on several bilateral issues, including medical cooperation, agricultural ties, humanitarian relations, and cultural exchanges. A joint statement was also issued, focusing on the development of a strategic partnership, bilateral trade, and continued military-technical cooperation.

“India’s support for Ukraine’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity is vital, as the principles of the UN Charter must be respected by all,” Zelenskyy said in a post on X.
