Yashasvi Jaiswal was dubbed as the 'new king' by the Australian media ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Series. Jaiswal arrived on Australian shores with a stunning record behind him, but there were doubts if he'd be as successful as he was in India against a fearsome bowling lineup on much challenging wickets. Jaiswal did not have the greatest of starts as he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, but he was quickly back to his usual best, scoring runs and adding to the opposition's misery. Jaswal scored a whirlwind 161 in the second innings of the Perth Test and set up India for a magnificent 295-run win over Australia.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Chases Sachin Tendulkar's Massive Feat
Jaiswal has been in magnificent form this year in Tests and scored over 700 runs in the home series against England. He blew hot and cold against Bangladesh and New Zealand but got the Border-Gavaskar Trophy off to a perfect start. Jaiswal is the second leading run scorer in Tests this year after Joe Root, with 1280 runs to his name. The southpaw thus is very close to breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time India record of most runs in a calendar year. Tendulkar scored 1562 runs in 14 matches in 2010 and Jaiswal is just 283 runs away from leapfrogging Tendulkar to top the list of most runs in a calendar year for India. With three Tests left in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this year, Jaiswal has great odds of breaking the record set by the Master Blaster. The record for most runs in a calendar year is held by Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 1788 runs in 11 Tests in 2006.
KL Rahul To Open With Jaiswal In 2nd Test?
KL Rahul and Jaiswal did well in the Perth Test but with Rohit Sharma back, India are in a dilemma to open with Rahul or captain Rohit. It is believed that Rohit Sharma might sacrifice his opening slot for Rahul and bat in the middle order.
