New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal shocked the nation on Sunday as he announced that he would resign from the Chief Minister’s post in the next two days. Calling for early elections in the national capital, Kejriwal said that he would sit on the Chief Minister’s chair after the people of Delhi put him back. Meanwhile, the BJP referred to Kejriwal’s move as a “PR stunt”.
The BJP questioned why Kejriwal needed two days time to step down from the CM post. The BJP has been demanding Kejriwal's resignation from the CM post since his arrest in the money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this year.
Calling it hollow, BJP Delhi president Virendra Sachdeva criticised Kejriwal’s move. “This so-called ‘two-day leave request’ is nothing but a smart act of transferring assets," he said, while adding that rather than indulging in theatrics, Kejriwal should have sacked his Cabinet and transparently addressed the corruption allegations against his government in the now-scrapped Excise Policy.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party clarified that Kejriwal has announced to step down in next two days noting that since today is Sunday and Monday is a holiday. On being asked why he (Delhi CM) needs two days time to resign during a press conference, Delhi Minister Atishi said, "Today is Sunday, tomorrow is a holiday for Eid-e-Milad, so the next working day is Tuesday. That's why two days time."
What Arvind Kejriwal Said?
Months ahead of the Delhi assembly election, Arvind Kejriwal announced that he will resign from the CM post, calling for early polls. Kejriwal, who walked out of Tihar jail on September 13, said that he would sit in the top chair only after the people of Delhi put him back there.
He also demanded that the elections be held in November 2024 instead of February 2025.
"Two days later, I will resign as Chief Minister. I will not sit on that chair till the people announce their verdict. Elections in Delhi are months away. I got justice from the legal court, now I will get justice from the people's court. I will sit on the Chief Minister's chair only after the order of the people," Kejriwal said.
"I want to ask the people of Delhi, is Kejriwal innocent or guilty? If I have worked, vote for me," he added.
