Gautam Gambhir endured a mixed start since he took over the charge of the Indian Cricket Team. India crushed Sri Lanka in the T20I series but suffered a first ODI series defeat at the hands of the island nation in 27 years.
India will next host Bangladesh for a two match Test series followed by a three match Test series against New Zealand on home soil. Jonty Rhodes has backed Gautam Gambhir to succeed in his new role.
Before becoming Team India's head coach, Gambhir was the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants and helped them qualify for the IPL playoffs back to back two times. Rode on his mentorship Kolkata Knight Riders lifted the IPL title for the third time this year.
Having worked with Gambhir at LSG, the South African gave an account of what the player would do to achieve success.
In an interaction with PTI during the Pro Cricket League Jonty said, "Wherever GG (Gautam Gambhir) goes he makes an impact, we saw this when he left the Lucknow Super Giants and went to the Kolkata Knight Riders the impact that he had,"
"He is very much a hands-on guy and is certainly somebody who knows what he wants and speaks his own mind."
"Gambhir leaves no stone unturned, and now that he has taken over the reigns of the Indian team, they will go from strength to strength."
Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the new mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants and the former Proteas international also gave his view on the appointment.
"A calm cricketing mind is what you need at the IPL level, especially in the dugout scenario. You need people with calm heads because it gets very tense.
"If emotions start to get the better of you it impacts everybody sitting in the dug-out or on the field. In such situations, it is great to have someone like Zak (Zaheer), because he brings the skills and the knowledge, and he also brings the mojo."
