When Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Russia's Kazan on Tuesday for the BRICS Summit, he was greeted with a range of traditional Russian delicacies. Local women, donning bright Tatar costumes, welcomed him with a plate of chak-chak and a korovai loaf that epitomises a region steeped in culinary and hospitality traditions. Kazan has deep cultural and historical importance for the Tatar and Bashkir regions.
Kazan is Russia's fifth city and located at the confluence of rivers Volga and Kazanka. Besides its deep Turkic influence, the city forms a unique melting pot of Russian and Tatar cultures.
What Is Chak-Chak?
Chak-chak is a fried piece of wheat dough, and in shape, it resembles Ratlami sev. The dish can be either round or cubical. Chak-Chak served to Modi were round and resembled traditional sweets like murhi-ka-laai from Bihar, muri-r-moa from Bengal, or mua from Odisha.
What Is Korovai?
A loaf of bread, korovai, decorated with floral patterns was also served to PM Modi on his arrival. The korovai is a must-have at weddings in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday touched down in Kazan city of Russia to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit. The Summit is being held under the Chairmanship of Russia.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Hotel Korston in Kazan, Russian nationals warmly welcomed PM Modi, by singing Krishna Bhajan. PM Modi was seen listening to the Krishna Bhajan performed by the Russian nationals. PM Modi also greeted and interacted with members of the Indian diaspora as he arrived at Hotel Korston. He is here to attend the 16th BRICS Summit, being held under the Chairmanship of Russia.
The Prime Minister is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from BRICS member countries.
