The makers of the upcoming Suraj Venjaramoodu and Vinayakan starrer Thekku Vadakku took to their social media on September 30, Monday, to release the trailer of the upcoming comedy drama film. The film is directed by Prem Sankar, who previously helmed Randuper, which was featured in the Competition Section of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in 2017.
The upcoming film has Vinayakan playing Madhavan, a retired KSEB engineer, while Suraj plays Shankunni, a sawmill owner. According to the makers, Thekku Vadakku revolves around an "unconventional relationship" between these two individuals. The release of the film was recently postponed from September 20 to October 4.
A Classic Gag Recreated
The first look poster of the film was released a few weeks ago. The poster exuded vibes of a comedy entertainer as it featured both the actors striking a funny dance pose. Also, a series of teasers were released online by the makers over the last few weeks. The last teaser, which was released a month ago, seems to have taken inspiration from a classic comedy short from the Charlie Chaplin silent-era-type of comedies.
The promo video recreated a situational comedy moment from a classic Charlie Chaplin film where the protagonist spots a man sitting on a bench with his face covered by the newspaper he is reading. The protagonist decides to take a look at the front page of the newspaper, and as he tries to read it, the person reading it reveals his face, and the two men stare at each other face-to-face, only to realise that they were looking at each other's arch rivals, thus they exit the spot in a huff. This same situation has been recreated hilariously in this short, using the characters of Vinayakan and Suraj Venjaramoodu in front of a roadside tea stall.
Based On A Short Story
The film is directed by Prem Sankar, who has earlier directed the acclaimed film Randu Peru, starring Basil Paulose and Shanti Balachandran. The screenplay of the film has been written by S Hareesh, who previously scripted Lijo Jose Pellissery’s acclaimed films Jallikattu, Churuli, and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam. Thekku Vadakku is based on a short story titled Rathri Kaaval (Night Watch). The team kickstarted the first schedule of the shoot on April 6 in Muttikulangara, a suburb of Palakkad, Kerala.
The cast of the film includes Melvin Babu, Shameer Khan, Kottayam Ramesh, Merin Jose, Vineeth Vishwam, Balan Palakkal, and James Parakkal. Thekku Vadakku has been jointly bankrolled by Anjana Philip and VA Shrikumar under the banners of Anjana Talkies and VARS Studios respectively.
