virender sehwag reveals why he wants to coach an ipl team and not team india

Virender Sehwag is one of the Indian legends who has never coached an international team. The former India opener retired from international cricket in 2015 and took up coaching and commentary. Sehwag, who represented Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2014 and 2015, joined their coaching staff as mentor in 2016 and later took up the role of the director of cricket. Sehwag coached PBKS till IPL 2018.

In 2017, Sehwag applied for the post of Team India's head coach but missed out as the Cricket Advisory Committee picked Ravi Shastri ahead of him. Sehwag hasn't applied for the top post since then.

Will Sehwag consider coaching Team India? Speaking to Amar Ujala, Sehwag said that he can coach an IPL team but not Team India. The Indian legend cited Team India's busy schedule as the reason behind not being interested in the job.

"I think, not for the Indian team, but if an opportunity comes for someone for the IPL team, I can definitely see it. Because if I become the coach of the Indian team, then I will return to the same routine which I have done in the last 15 years. You played for the Indian team for 15 years, staying out of home for eight months a year. Right now my kids are 14 and 16 and they need me. Both play cricket. One is an off-spinner and one is an opening batsman. I have to teach them…have to spend time with them," Sehwag told Amar Ujala.

"If I become the coach of the Indian team, then it will be the biggest challenge for me if the players of Team India remain out for eight months. Then I will not be able to give my time to the children. But yes, if I get the role of a coach or mentor in IPL, then I will definitely think about it."

Sehwag has stayed away from coaching since 2018. PBKS didn't have a memorable run under him and failed to qualify for the second round in any of the seasons. In fact, they haven't played an IPL playoff fixture since 2014. They have only cleared the league stage twice in 17 years.
