A trip to Kashmir is incomplete without sampling its traditional culinary delights, especially the local walnuts. A food vlogger recently highlighted this unique delicacy in a video shared on Instagram. In the clip, he approached a vendor selling green fruits, initially mistaking them for guavas (amruds). However, the vendor corrected him, revealing that they were actually akhrots (walnuts), before cutting open the outer layer to showcase the wheatish-yellow kernel inside.
“Toh bhaiya yeh akhrot kaha se laate ho, kahi se kharid te ho aap?” (Brother, from where do you bring these walnuts? Do you purchase them from somewhere?), the vlogger asks. The vendor explains that these walnuts are home-grown and freshly plucked from his garden. He then offers a piece of the walnut to the vlogger, who responds with enthusiasm, saying, “Maine aaj tak isse tasty akhrot nahi khaya” (I have never tried walnuts as tasty as these).

Social media users quickly reacted to the video, expressing their appreciation for fresh walnuts. One user remarked, "Fresh walnuts are awesome," while another commented on the local practice of removing the thin outer skin before consumption. A resident of Himachal Pradesh chimed in, saying, “Humara apna ped hai aur hum ekdum fresh khaate hain” (We have our own tree and have fresh walnuts from there). Many users also enquired about the cost and price per kilogramme for both fresh and dried walnuts, highlighting the growing interest in this local delicacy.
