In separate incident, several locals and reporters shared videos showing hundreds of fish washed ashore on Mumbai's famous Mahim Beach. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement regarding the unusual phenomenon, but the visuals had quickly gone viral on social media.
The sighting of fish washed ashore has often led to speculation of impending natural disasters – especially earthquakes. In some cultures, like Japanese folklore, oarfish is associated with such calamities. Oarfish are also called 'doomsday fish' because they have surfaced before natural disasters in the past. However, the fish spotted in Mahim was not an oarfish. While the spotting is an unusual event and raises curiosity, it is not a definitive sign of an impending calamity. Further investigation by marine authorities is necessary to determine the exact cause.
