The excitement of climbing on teammates’ shoulders and offering a salute from the top is unmatched, according to the participants. The human pyramid has evolved significantly since the 1950s and 1980s. “It used to be just a public festival, but now it’s also a sport,” said Sachin Khanvilkar, manager at Oriental Insurance, who manages insurance for participants across Maharashtra. Oriental Insurance created this policy in 2005 and remains the only company offering insurance for Dahi Handi.
