The Miami-Dade Police Department announced Sunday that one of its officers had been placed on administrative leave following the detainment of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Shortly before the Dolphins' home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the incident happened outside Hard Rock Stadium.
The incident began on Sunday morning when a large group of police arrested Hill and handcuffed him. Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, expressed frustration over the treatment of the player, stating in a televised interview, “There’s no reason Tyreek should have been treated that way. We’re gonna look into that after the game.”
Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels responded swiftly, issuing an initial statement via NFL Media. "We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers,” Daniels stated. “I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as further information becomes available."
A few hours later, Daniels released another statement, confirming that the involved officer had been placed on administrative duties. She further noted, "Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter."
The arrest happened before to the highly anticipated Dolphins vs. Jaguars game. Hill returned to the field and put up an outstanding performance in spite of the off-field circumstances. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa connected with Hill for an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter, with Miami behind 17–7. Hill, who is renowned for his quickness, outran opponents to finish the play. Hill celebrated the score by emulating being in handcuffs, seemingly alluding to his past detention.
The issue is still being looked into.
