tumbbad, veer zaara, rhtdm: why is bollywood re-releasing films? experts opine | exclusive

Laila Majnu, Veer Zaara, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, Tumbbad, Tum Bin and many other Bollywood films have been re-released this month. Fans love it but are also confused about why suddenly it is happening with almost every film. Earlier, as the hit films used to complete 20-25 years, the makers used to re-release the film for one day but in the last few months, many old Bollywood films have been re-released and are running good numbers at the Box office.

2 films have re-released alongside Kareena Kapoor's The Buckingham Murders and both are doing better business than the Hansal Mehta directorial. In an exclusive conversation with Zoom, Trade Analysts talked about the reason behind this culture and said that this is due to a lack of good content in the industry currently.

Trade Analysts on Re-Release Trend

When we asked Taran Adarsh about his thoughts on Bollywood films getting re-released, he said, "We can say that this is happening because there is a scarcity of content in the market right now. We don't have major releases lined up for quite some time and in the coming weeks also there are no big releases which is why re-releases are trying their luck at the box office."

Further, he added, "But I want to add that this trend is not new, it happened back in the 70s and 80s also. Films like Mughal-E-Azam, Mera Naam Joker and many action entertainers like Don, Kasme Vaade, Sholay andAmar Akbar Anthony were re-relesed and they did amazing business. Thanks to OTT and satellite channels, the re-release trend stopped as people could watch films, content as per their own convenience.”

"Now, the trend has revived, and it's a great trend. A chunk of the generation that has missed out on those films on the big screens can now experience it," he concluded.

It's due to poor planning of filmmakers: Film critics

Film critic Sumit Kadel too added his thoughts on this, he said, "Bollywood re-releasing old films isn’t new trend and happens when there’s not enough fresh content. Right now, many old films are coming back to theaters because September has no big releases."

"This is due to poor planning by filmmakers. However, after October, many new films are set to release, so we won’t see as many re-releases then," he added.

Industry expert Ramesh Bala added to the conversation and said, "It started with South industry actually, in last one or two years many films re-released and did well. Now, the trend has moved to Bollywood as this year, we are not having big releases every Friday. Many Fridays are going empty and theatres are looking for good content that is why re-releases are having to keep the halls occupied."

Also, he added, "Hoping for new content from Bollywood, at least a big blockbuster every 2 weeks, until then this re-release trend must continue."
