donald trump’s ukraine peace plan eyes dmz-style zone, echoing korea’s divide

President-elect Donald Trump's reported peace plan for Russia and Ukraine would lead to a demilitarised zone identical to the one that divides South Korea and North Korea, an expert told the Daily Express. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the Republican plans on ceasing the war to construct a demilitarised territory following his win in the recent US election.

A source from Trump's team said, "We can do training and other support but the barrel of the gun is going to be European."

"We are not sending American men and women to uphold peace in Ukraine. And we are not paying for it. Get the Poles, Germans, British and French do it," the source added.

Defence and security analyst, Nicholas Drummond told the Daily Express, that although the reported plan is just a "speculation," however, if brought to action, it could bring new risks.

"It could look like that [North Korea and South Korea's border]. I think we have learned that we cannot trust Putin. We have seen a new military tactic in Ukraine where he has threatened the use of nuclear weapons against the West if we interfere."

He then added, "And yet he has used conventional weapons to sort Ukraine. Will he go as far as using nuclear weapons? It is a gamble. I think the risk is a war starting from miscalculation."

"There are issues behind the scenes that could make a demilitarised zone redundant…it is difficult, there are a lot of details that would need to be worked out," Drummond concluded.

What Is The DMZ?

Demilitarised Zone or the DMZ was built as a zone that separates North Korea and South Korea. It was built in 1953 after the Korean War.
