Oklahoma Education Superintendent Ryan Walters' office on Friday defended the selection process for newly mandated Bibles in classrooms. This comes after a report earlier in the day noted that the criteria is narrow and essentially no Bibles qualify – except for the ones endorsed by former President Donald Trump. The Republican presidential nominee's campaign is yet to react to the report.
The Oklahoman reported that the Department of Education Oklahoma is bidding for the supply of 55,000 Bibles – but only Trump Bibles fit the criteria. According to the report, the Bibles must be the King James version, must contain the Old and New Testaments, include copies of the Pledge of Allegiance, Declaration of Independence, U.S.
Constitution and the Bill of Rights; and must be bound in leather or leather-like material.

Reports say that only God Bless the USA Bible by Lee Greenwood fits the bill. The Bible is popularly referred to as the Trump Bible after the former president endorsed them. One copy costs around $60.
Responding to the criticism on social media, Oklahoma Appleseed Center for Law and Justice Executive Director Colleen McCarty told The Oklahoman: "The RFP on its face seems fair, but with additional scrutiny, we can see there are very few Bibles on the market that would meet these criteria, and all of them have been endorsed by former President Donald Trump."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Walters office told The Hill that 'it would be inappropriate to comment while bids are being placed' for who will supply the bibles for Oklahoma classrooms.
“We are excited to bring back the Bible in its essential historical and literary context to Oklahoma classrooms. Superintendent Walters has committed the agency to an open and transparent RFP process, consistent with the norms for state procurement, that will be adequate to meet the needs of Oklahoma classrooms. There are hundreds of Bible publishers and we expect a robust competition for this proposal,” the spokesperson added.
