travellers will soon be able to take electric air taxis from bengaluru to its airport

Bengaluru, a city notorious for its traffic congestion, could soon experience a transportation revolution. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Sarla Aviation have joined forces to explore the potential of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, or air taxis.

This partnership aims to redefine air travel by offering a faster, cleaner, and more accessible mode of transportation. The collaboration will focus on developing operational models for seven-seater eVTOL aircraft, which could significantly reduce travel times between the city centre and the airport.

Cost Of Air Taxis

Sarla Aviation envisions making aerial ride-sharing as affordable as traditional cab services. According to their estimates, a trip from Bengaluru airport to Electronic City could be completed in just 19 minutes by air, at a cost of approximately Rs 1700. This compares favourably to current cab rides, which can take over two hours and cost around Rs 2,500 for premium services.

The CEO of Sarla Aviation expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to alleviate Bengaluru's traffic woes. The company aims to reduce travel times between Indiranagar and the airport from 1.5 hours to just 5 minutes using electric flying taxis. The CEO wrote on LinkedIn, said "I am proud to announce our partnership with Bangalore International Airport Ltd, marking a significant step in addressing Bengaluru’s congestion challenges." "Currently, a journey from Indiranagar to the airport can take 1.5 hours. Very soon, we will reduce that to just 5 minutes with Sarla Aviation's fully electric flying taxis. I’m truly inspired by the leadership at Bengaluru Airport, whose vision challenges young companies like ours to push boundaries and redefine what’s possible. Together, we are dedicated to creating a better future for Karnataka, India, and the world," the CEO added.

This initiative not only promises to improve transportation efficiency but also aligns with sustainability goals. Electric aircraft offer a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles, reducing carbon emissions and contributing to a healthier environment. Earlier in June, Madhya Pradesh had started an intrastate air taxi service, connecting prominent destinations in the state including Bhopal, Ujjain, Gwalior, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur.
