The Japanese manufacturer known for its reliable cars seems to be planning on creating a more powerful version of the Toyota Supra. This version of the car will come with a massive 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine and will be used under the hood of a car designed to race in the Repco Supercars Championship in 2026. This is a significant development as it might lead to the creation of a powerful Supra capable of competing against the likes of the Ford Mustang powered by a 5.4-litre engine called Coyote and the Chevrolet Camaro seeking power from a 5.7-litre V8 engine.

Backstory

The Toyota Supra is undeniably one of the most popular names in the Japanese automaker’s stable. The car initially gained popularity and legendary status among enthusiasts because of its 2JZ inline-six engine which left a lot of room for tuners to extract more power. To boost its popularity even more the car was featured in the Fast and Furious franchise. To cash on this popularity, the Japanese giant revived the name but this time with a power unit borrowed from BMW. Now, the outgoing version of the Supra in its track-only GT4 variant uses an inline-six, which has its roots embedded in the state of Bavaria.

Now the brand is planning on using the aforementioned V8 for the Supra which in Toyota's development facility is called the 2UR-GSE. This is an aluminum unit that has been the source of power for multiple models like IS F, GS F, RC F, LC 500 and IS 500 F. Furthermore, this power unit also helped a Hilux pickup truck win at the Dakar Rally in 2019.

What We Know So Far

Toyota will enter the race championship with four cars sporting the GR badge. These cars will be competing for the Walkinshaw Andretti United Team. It is worth mentioning that the Walkinshaw Automotive Group is already working with Toyota on the conversion of the Tundra Trucks.

Toyota has a clay model of the upcoming race car along with a few renderings that suggest the car will have a massive rear wing. Special attention has been paid to the exhaust pipes which get a chrome treatment and have been placed under the side doors. To match the capabilities of the massive rear wing the brand has added a front splitter and placed large air intakes in the front bumper.
