Travis Head singlehandedly destroyed England in the first ODI as he smashed a career-best 154 to lead Australia to a seven-wicket win in the first ODI. Riding on Head’s brilliance, Australia chased down England’s 315 with six overs to spare.
Ben Duckett scored a magnificent 95 while Will Jacks came up with a handy 62 as the home side piled up a huge 315 runs on the board. England would be very disappointed with their batting performance as the Three Lions were 211 for 2 after 32 overs.
But Australian spinners did a fantastic job as England’s final seven wickets fell for just 83 runs. In the run chase, Captain Mitchell Marsh departed for 10 but it was Head who turned heads with his scintillating batting performance. His innings consisted of 20 fours and five sixes and it laid the path for a fantastic run chase at Trent Bridge in the 1st ODI.
In the proceedings, the Australian opener also broke Rohit Sharma’s record as he now holds the record of registering the highest individual score in a successful run chase at Trent Bridge. He also became the highest scoring Australian on the English soil.
Head spoke after the match as he reflected on his sensational innings. As quoted by ESPN Cricinfo he said, "Got a bit lucky at the start of my innings but know if you get through there's a lot of runs on offer. Felt like we battled and grind, used different people. Jofra had it going round corners. Thought we played spin exceptionally well. I have a bit of a blueprint and a role, enjoy doing my role, play the game a little more relaxed now."
