Food

The Chuseok special menu curated by Chef Lee featured traditional Korean dishes that celebrate the autumn harvest and family gatherings. We started off our Korean food sojourn with the iconic fermented vegetable dish -Kimchi. The first bite was tangy and slightly sour, thanks to the fermentation process, but this was quickly followed by a deep, umami-rich spiciness from the gochugaru (Korean red chilli flakes). Next on the table was the appetizers where the spices sang on our palate. Kkanppong-gi, Soy Spicy Chicken and Deep-Fried Platter. Kkanppong-gi, deep-fried chicken coated with sweet and savoury spice, had the perfect balance of crunch and spice. But our favourite was the soy spicy chicken which was crispy on the outside yet juicy and tender inside, with the sauce perfectly coated to every piece. The deep-fried platter featured an assortment of oriental meats, chicken, fish and prawns that were battered and crumbed fried and served with a selection of dipping sauce.

Moving on to the main course, we tried Tteokbokki- a street food dish made with rice cakes simmered in a spicy, sweet and savoury sauce. The gochujang (Korean red chilli paste) coated chewy rice cakes were soft and slightly sticky providing a delightful texture. The next dish was Chef Lee's favourite- Bibimbap, a comforting rice bowl prepped with sticky white rice topped with a variety of sauteed vegetables, meat, fried egg and a dollop of gochujang. We also tried deonjang chige, soya bean paste stew which had a deep umami taste, with a slightly nutty and earthy profile. The menu also featured three kinds of Jeon (savoury pancakes) made with meat, vegetables and seafood served with a selection of dipping sauces. We ended our dinner on a sweet note with Taraegua- a deep-fried rice cracker with honey glaze, sesame seeds and nuts.
