6th September marks a special day in Indian cricket, as three years ago the Indian cricket team secured one of their most famous victories in Test cricket at the Oval by beating England under Virat Kohli's captaincy by a margin of 157 runs.

With the five-match Test series tied at 1-1, the pressure was on both teams to take a 2-1 lead in the series heading to the final Test. The hosts made a great start by bowling out India for just 191 runs despite half-centuries from Kohli and Shardul Thakur.

In reply, England posted a total of 290 on the board and took a massive lead of 99 runs. As India found themselves behind in the game, Rohit Sharma produced the first overseas Test century of his career with an incredible knock of 127 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, and Shardul scored half-centuries while Kohli got a knock of 44 to power India to a massive total of 466.

Chasing 367, England made a flawless start as openers Rory Burn and Haseen Hameed put up a 100-run partnership as the home team walked out to bat on the final day without losing any wickets. On Day 5, the Indian bowling unit masterfully captained by Kohli and with a genius spell from Jasprit Bumrah produced a performance for the ages to bowl out England for 210.

Shane Warne Hails Virat Kohli

After the match, Australian cricket team legend Shane Warne was all praise for Indian captain Kohli. The second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history hailed India's most successful Test skipper for his passion for Test cricket. Warne pleaded with Kohli to continue playing for as long as possible to ensure that the longest and oldest format of the game continues to remain the pinnacle.

“They look up to him. He’s got the respect of all the players. They back him and they play for him. It’s important for a captain that a team plays for you. I think the way Virat conducts himself, we’ve all got to say, ‘Thank You, Virat’

"He loves Test cricket and he’s made it a priority. India is a powerhouse in world cricket and you’ve got the biggest superstar on the planet, Virat Kohli, saying Test cricket is important, we’re going to Australia and win and we’re going to England and win," said Warne to SKY Sports.

"Belief is such an important part of the sport. Virat Kohli gives them that belief. I think it's great to watch. Long live Test cricket. Long live Test cricket while we have Virat Kohli. Please keep playing for a long, long time, Virat," Warne added.

As fate will have it, that turned out to be Kohli's fourth last Test match in charge of the Indian side, as he stepped down from the job a few months later in January 2022, with Rohit Sharma replacing him. However, Kohli has continued to remain an integral part of the Indian team in the longest format.

Warne passed away in March 2022 following a suspected heart attack.

As far as the series is concerned, the Oval Test proved to be the last of the tour as the fifth Test was postponed minutes before it was set to start in Manchester due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Indian camp. India returned to England to finish the series nine months later with Bumrah leading the side after Kohli's resignation and an illness to Rohit. The visitors lost the game which meant the series ended 2-2.
