sterilisation among us women on the rise after donald trump's victory: report

1 in 5 women in the US have undergone sterilization or are planning to take the big step soon, after Donald Trump swept the 2024 presidential elections, Newsweek reported.

"If I am to be denied any rights in the next four years, I will not give them up without a fight," said Lydia Echols, a 28 year old Texas resident.

She added that having her fallopian tubes removed would be a price she would happily pay to ensure her reproductive heights, as per the news publication.

Recently, another woman in her 40s from Washington DC did not want to be named. She underwent a bilateral salpingectomy, where her fallopian tubes were removed.

Abortion Issues

Reproductive rights and abortion were key issues in this year's election. Trump has frequently said that he supports letting the states make their own abortion laws. He claimed credit for the Supreme Court's 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which eliminated the nation's constitutional right to an abortion.

The president-elect also said that in October, he wrote on Truth Social that he would urge for a national abortion ban. "I would not support a federal abortion ban, under any circumstances, and would, in fact veto it, because it is up to the states to decide based on the will of their voters."

Women On Trump's Win

Morgan Wood, a 24-year-old Georgia resident who has never desired children, has contemplated sterilisation due to severe gynaeocologic problems she had been dealing with since middle school.

Prior to Trump's win, Wood had assumed that she would have to decide whether to get sterilised when she grew older. When she approaches 27, when it will be time to have her intrauterine device (IUD) removed, she expected to start questioning physicians about sterilisation.

However, she stated that it became a "now" problem after November 5 and that a consultation has been scheduled on December 5.

Another lady by the name of Ashley Hedden, was worried about sexual assault and care for Pregnant women. Additionally she was scared as she saw reports of several women dying in the states where the laws exit doctors come to intervene.
