Saif Ali Khan is the Nawab of Pataudi, and his family owns the Pataudi Palace. The palace was once leased to a hotel, but Saif bought it back. Now, the Pataudi family uses it as a vacation home. Several films have been shot at the palace and recently Saif's sister Soha Ali Khan talked about their ancestral home, which mainly belongs to her brother.

During the conversation, she opened up about her royal heritage and the historic Pataudi Palace. She told Cyrus Broacha, “My mother sits with her hisaab-kitaab; she knows daily expenditure and monthly expenditure. For example, we whitewash Pataudi, it’s not painted because it’s a lot less expensive. And we haven’t bought anything new for a long time. It’s the architecture of the place that’s most inviting; it’s not the things, it’s not the objects."

She also shared intriguing details about her family history, pointing her grandmother's status as the Begum of Bhopal and her grandfather as the Nawab of Pataudi.
“I was born after the privy purses and royal titles were abolished in 1970. My brother was born a prince because he was born in 1970… With the titles comes a lot of responsibility and bills… My grandmother was the begum of Bhopal and my grandfather was the nawab of Pataudi; he loved her for many years but was not allowed to marry her… The Pataudi Palace was built to impress his father-in-law," she added.

Soha recounted the palace's construction, which was earlier aimed at impressing her grandfather's father-in-law. However, her grandfather “ran out of money” while building the palace, which is why there are more carpets than marble in some areas. Soha is responsible for the ‘generator room,’ which is a two-BHK apartment.

While the Pataudi Palace was once leased to Neemrana Hotels, but Saif Ali Khan bought back the Pataudi Palace. It has since become a vacation home for the family and a popular filming location for various productions, including Ranbir Kapoor's Animal and Saif’s own series, Tandav.
