what is double cleansing and the best cleansers in india

Double cleansing is exactly what it sounds like – you have to wash your face twice. But that’s not all; you have to switch up your cleanser over the two rounds to achieve a deeper clean. Celebs also swear by it, which is why it has gained popularity in recent years. While many advocate for its benefits, the question remains: is it necessary for everyone?

All You Need To Know About Double Cleansing

“Double cleansing is a skincare technique involving two types of cleansers to thoroughly remove impurities from the skin. It starts with an oil-based cleanser or balm to dissolve and lift away oil-based impurities like makeup and sunscreen. This is followed by a water-based cleanser, such as a gel or foam, to remove any remaining dirt and sweat,” explains Dr Neha Yadav, dermatologist, VLCC India. On why double cleansing is considered better, she adds, “This method ensures a deeper clean compared to traditional cleansing, which typically involves a single, water-based cleanser that may not fully remove all impurities, especially if makeup or sunscreen is worn regularly. Double cleansing prevents clogged pores and prepares the skin for better absorption of other skincare products.”

Does It Work For Everyone?

While double cleansing can be beneficial for many, it may not be necessary for everyone. Pranauthi Sangisetti, founder of Dab to Fab skincare, explains who should actually opt for double cleansing. “If you regularly use sunscreen and makeup, double cleansing is a great step to add to your evening routine. It helps to thoroughly clean your face before bed. Start by washing your hands, then move on to cleansing. Double cleansing helps remove all the day’s impurities, preventing buildup that can clog pores and cause irritation. It also strengthens your skin’s barrier, which is important for keeping your skin healthy and ensuring that your skincare products work better.”

While the benefits are surely tempting, this method does come with a few pitfalls for certain skin types, even when you use products that cater to your needs. According to Dr Yadav, while double cleansing is generally effective, potential downsides should be considered, especially for those with sensitive or compromised skin. “Using harsh or drying cleansers can lead to irritation, dryness, and inflammation. Individuals with eczema or rosacea should consult a dermatologist before adopting this method, as it may worsen their conditions. For those with dry or sensitive skin, it may be wise to skip the second cleansing step if the skin feels stripped or dry. Additionally, oil-based products may not be suitable for everyone, so patch-testing new products on a small skin area is recommended,” she adds.

How To Pick The Right Cleanser

Largely, there are two types of cleanser and this is the right process:

Oil-Based Cleanser: Apply a small amount of oil-based cleanser to dry skin. Gently massage the cleanser into your skin, focusing on areas with heavy makeup. Rinse with warm water.

Water-Based Cleanser: Apply a water-based cleanser to your damp skin. Gently massage the cleanser into your skin, ensuring it reaches your hairline and neck. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

According to Pranauthi, when selecting products for double cleansing, it's important to consider key ingredients that work together to effectively clean your skin without stripping it of its natural oils. She shares key things you need to keep in mind before you start your double cleanse routine:

First Cleanse:

  • Gentle Surfactants: Look for mild surfactants that cleanse without over-drying your skin.
  • Plant Oils and Emulsifiers: These are ideal for breaking down sunscreen, minimal makeup, and daily grime. If you're dealing with waterproof makeup like mascara, opt for oil-based cleansers that attract and dissolve oil-based products.

Second Cleanse: The choice of your second cleanser should depend on your skin’s specific needs:

  • Hydrating Cleansers: Great for maintaining moisture balance and supporting the skin barrier.
  • Active Ingredient Cleansers: For example, a salicylic acid-based cleanser can help with acne-prone or oily skin by gently exfoliating and unclogging pores.
