singham again movie review: rohit shetty cooks up family-sized entertainer with mix of action, drama, comedy

Singham Again Movie Review: The Rohit Shetty cop universe is back with Singham Again, where Ajay Devgn’s Bajirao Singham is the focus of things. The movie is essentially an Avengers-style crossover, also featuring Kareena Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Tiger Shroff, Jacky Shroff, Ravi Kishan and Arjun Kapoor. Releasing alongside Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, will this latest cop action drama come out on top in this big Diwali clash?

Singham Again Movie Review: Plot

The movie follows Singham (Ajay Devgn) as he attempts to bring his wife (Kareena Kapoor) back after she has been taken hostage. A very clear reference to Ramayana is seen as they are portrayed as Ram and Sita. In the journey to get her back, Singham must face obstacles, and of course, save the country with help from several of his friends, well-wishers, and 'followers'. In Rohit Shetty's cop film, we see too many cooks attempting to make the broth. Do they spoil it or save it? Let us find out.

The film starts in Kashmir, where Singham talks about stopping the radicalisation of Kashmiri youth. It takes us to the beautiful valleys of the state. The first action sequence is enough to tell us that if anybody can pull off the audacious swag of Bajirao Singham, it's Ajay Devgn. However, the question is, can he carry the film purely on his aura? For starters, the film's dialogues take the cringe route several times, especially when a young boy from Kashmir says, "Patthar marna old fashioned hai. Ye naya Hindustan hai. Hum aapke saath hain, sir" and Singham states, "Tu to janta hai, ab Hindustan ghus kar maarta hai". The new background music for the titular character does not have the same energetic vibe as the original, which is again a big drawback in a mass film.

The action is fast-paced, stylish and in typical Rohit Shetty style, involves a lot of blowing, blasting and over-the-top craze. However, the comic elements, that made the previous Singham movies extremely enjoyable, are deficient. The jokes, barring the ones cracked by the appointed court jester Simmba (Ranveer Singh) and the charming new entry Shakti Shetty (Deepika Padukone), do not land. While the latter's charm does not quite work in the action sequences, she excels in emotional scenes.

Arjun Kapoor as 'Danger Lanka' aka Zubair Hafeez is menacing, brutal and nothing like the brand of antagonists like Jaykant Shikre, who had a comic element to go with the brutality. He is out there to kill and slaughter, without saying a word in his very first scene. Tiger Shroff, who plays ACP Satya, makes an appearance towards the end of the first half and his hand-to-hand action scenes are applause-worthy, but the same cannot be said about his dialogue delivery. The second half with both Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar is upbeat and entertaining, without fail.

Singham Again's strong reference to Ramayana helps take the narrative of the movie forward. While the storyline is quite predictable, that does not take away from the film's entertainment. You do not expect anything new, you expect whistle-worthy scenes and you get them throughout the movie. Do not expect to get a strong storyline, tear-jerking performance or unexpected twists from Singham Again. Logic and Rohit Shetty entertainers do not align and if you are a fan of the latter, this movie will live up to your expectations.
