Shogun – story and plot

The FX and Hulu series is the second adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel. The first miniseries of the novel aired on US television in 1980. Former Westworld showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks took on the task of adapting the book into a 10-episode series. The show opens with John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) a brash English pilot who lands up on Japanese soil with his ship and crew. With his knowledge of the seas and global politics of the time, he earns the trust of Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Sanada), a powerful daimyo with dangerous political rivals. Blackthorne also forms an alliance with Lady Mariko (Sawai) who is looking to redeem her family name with her loyalty to Toranaga. Together, they work to bring peace to a divided Japan.

Shogun – cast

Japanese star Sanada is already known in Hollywood for his roles in The Last Samurai, Sunshine and John Wick. The actor is also a producer on the series, which means he is a double winner at the ceremony. Sawai, a former J-pop star, is also part of the hit series Pachinko andMonarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Shogun at Emmy 2024

Shogun already picked 14 Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys held on September 7 and 8. In addition to its Best Drama Series win, the Japanese show also won Best Actress in a Drama Series for Sawai, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Sanada, and Best Drama Directing for Frederick EO Toye.

Shogun's win is historic as the first non-English-language series to win in the outstanding drama series category. Sanada and Sawai are also the first Japanese actors to win big at the Emmys.’
