The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the squad for the three-match T20I series against India, starting on October 6. Star all-rounder Mehidy Hasan returned to the side after a gap of 14 months. Veteran Shakib Al Hasan wasn’t picked as he announced his retirement from the format recently. Left-handed opener Parvez Hossain Emon and left-arm orthodox Rakibul Hasan also got a call-up for the T20I series. Soumya Sarkar and Tanvir Ahmed, who were part of the last ICC T20 World Cup, could not retain their spots.
In a bold move, BCB also retained veteran Mahmudullah in the squad. BCB chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain said the board feels Mahmudullah could play a vital role in T20Is for the team and thus was retained in the squad. He added that filling Shakib Al Hasan's void would be impossible for the board, but said that Mehidy Hasan is someone who can take his spot.
"In the middle order the great Shakib Al Hasan announced that he had already played his last T20 match and experience that he had, we don't have anyone close to that, but what we feel is that someone who can bat in his place is Mehidy Miraz," Gazi said. "We feel that he can contribute the most with his batting and he is good with off-spin and we consider his batting and bowling with a lot of importance in Test matches and ODIs," said Gazi Ashraf.
