sarfaraz khan out; kl rahul in as ex-chief selector clears air over selection conundrum for 1st test

The India vs Bangladesh Tests series will be a test for selectors' and they will have to pick a strong playing XI. It's not always easy to pick India's playing XI given the sheer competition in the team. Most of the playing XI is more or less confirmed but there will be a few contenders for a couple of slots which selectors will have to take a call on. Sarfaraz Khan and KL Rahul will compete for the number five slot.

KL Rahul had a remarkable series against England but Rahul is one of the key pillars of the Test side. He has blown hot and cold in recent times but given his stature and past performance, he is likely to get a nod ahead of Khan, who has also been named in the Duleep Trophy squad for the second match, which is a big hint for Rahul's selection in the first Test.

Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth and chief selector said he feels bad for Sarfaraz but backed the move to play Rahul over the youngster. He also feels that Rishabh Pant will be preferred over Dhruv Jurel in the first Test.

"Honestly, I feel bad for Sarfaraz Khan. But, this happens, at times, in Test cricket. You would have been playing well but when a big player returns, you will have to lose your place. Take for instance, Rishabh Pant is returning because of which Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan are losing their places. KL Rahul is coming in," Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

KL Rahul's selection over Sarfaraz could also be inspired by the fact that India have a tough tour to Australia lined up in November and Rahul, being one of the more experienced players, would play a massive role. Srikkanth highlighted Rahul's overseas record and said he is a better player and deserves a shot ahead of Sarfaraz.

"At the back of the mind, they are also keeping the Australia series. New Zealand are also coming. KL Rahul has performed well overseas, in Australia he has done well," added Srikkanth.
