right to match returns in ipl 2025 auction: what is rtm and how does it work? explained

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the retention details for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The franchises were allowed to retain up to six players via the traditional method or Right To Match Card (RTM). The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players. RTM, which was done away with in the 2022 Mega Auction, returns after three editions.

What Is RTM And How Does It Work?

RTM allows a franchise to buy back a player in the auction. This can be done by matching the highest bid of the franchise that won the player in the auction. The BCCI has also added a slight twist to the rule this year to make it more rewarding for the player. Earlier, the franchise could buy back a player by matching the highest bid, but in the upcoming auction, the team who won the bidding war can increase the bid for one final time before the team holding the RTM claims a player.

"BCCI has introduced a substantial change to the way the RTM option can be played during the auction. Where previously, the team could simply agree to match the highest bid amount at the auction to claim the player, this time around, the highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to further raise their bid before the team holding the RTM claims the player," read the report in Cricbuzz.

The BCCI has also increased the purse for IPL franchises from ₹100 crore to ₹120 crore. The franchises can retain players for ₹18 crore, ₹14 crore and ₹11 crore for the first three retentions. For additional two retentions, they will have to pay ₹18 crore and ₹14 crore.

Uncapped Ruled Brought Back

The BCCI also brought back the uncapped player rule. Under this rule, the franchise can retain players who have not had a BCCI contract in the last five years under the uncapped category. The franchise will have to shell 4 crores to retain an uncapped player.
