Reeta Sanyal Review: Adah Sharma plays the title character, Reeta Sanyal, a confident lawyer who is good at her job. However, when she decides to take on a case about a murdered politician, it may end up being the case of a lifetime. The Disney+ Hotstar series is based on Amit Khan’s novels Reeta Sanyal Ke Mukaddamein, and the story has been adapted by Deeptak Das. The overall story has promise; however, the smaller scenes come off a bit amateurish.
Reeta Sanyal Review: Plot
Sharma’s Reeta is shown as compassionate as she takes on an impossible case of a woman on death row. It is clear that she is innocent, but to prove otherwise will be an uphill task for Reeta and her associate Ishan (Manik Papneja). There is also a crafty lawyer named Thakral (Rahul Dev) that she must contend with, which also links back to her past and her dead father. The upcoming episodes will give more clues.
Reeta Sanyal Review: Writing and Direction
Much of the first episode, directed by Abhirup Ghosh, holds promise; there is a deep political conspiracy that goes into law and enforcement. How Reeta manages to uncover this, mixing the genres of comedy and drama, will be interesting to watch.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-jDWfiMLTA
But as the episodes are short, these tonal shifts can get jarring quickly. For instance, in the first seven minutes, the show moves from having a dog on trial to the murder trial of a high-profile politician. The first episode also has a lot of exposition to get through, introducing us to the characters and the narrative.
Reeta Sanyal Review: Performances
When the series stays focused on Sharma’s Reeta, Ishan, and even police inspector Jai Vardhan (Ankur Rathee), it keeps you engaged. The actors also convince you easily about their characters. The rest of the cast is a bit lacking in their conviction.
Reeta Sanyal Review: Critique
The last few minutes ofReeta Sanyal also introduce a female assassin named Zi (Nirisha Basnett), who is being set up as Sharma’s foil. It’s unclear how this matchup is going to unfold, but for now, it seems a bit murky. As a legal thriller, Reeta Sanyal has set up an intriguing mystery. I hope the narrative isn’t further clouded up with unnecessary detours.
