Congratulations , your film is going to the Oscars?
I never thought one of my films would one day go so far. I am very very excited. The global audience will get to see the real India. It’s all God’s grace and Kiran Rao m’aam’s hard work. All credit must go to Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan and the writers.
Not to you?
Ha ha ha. That is for you to write. Main apni taarif khud kaise karoon?
Yeah, what with your mouth filled with paan?
Ha ha, do you know I ate one hundred and sixty paan during the shooting.
You were counting?
Of course. I had to. After all, this was my first Paan-India film.
Good one. After Laapataa Ladies sales of paan went up?
I hope not! Paan is not good for health. Thankfully I didn’t get addicted to paan.Kiranji wanted my character to keep eating something. She suggested samosa . I said why not paan?
What did you enjoy the most about Laapataa Ladies?
You mean other than the paan? My character Manohar had addressed issues as wide-ranging as corruption and women’s empowerment. Manohar in Kiranji’s film is happy being corrupt. But somewhere he has a conscience. I think most of us are grey rather than black or white.
Would you like to accompany the team to Los Angeles to lobby for the Oscars?
I would love to, depending on my schedules, and depending on the team’s plans. I am yet to connect with them. We must have a celebration. Never imagined twoLaapataa Ladies would find us a place on the global map.
