Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, to Naval and Sooni Tata. He attended Campion School till the eighth grade, then went on to Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, as well as Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. He eventually studied architecture at Cornell University and worked briefly for the architectural firm Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles before returning to India in 1962.

After his return, Tata joined the Tata Group, beginning his career with the Tata Steel business in Jamshedpur. He later completed a management course at Harvard Business School in 1975 and became chairman of the Tata Group in 1991.

Ratan Tata sold a 0.06% stake in brokerage site Upstox for nearly $2 million (Rs 18 crore). This transaction represents a staggering 23,000% return on his initial investment from eight years ago. The statement was made on Thursday, just as Upstox was valued at $3.5 billion in 2022.

Ratan Tata's strategy to partially sell his stock aims to make profits while retaining 95% of his original stake in the company. With the deal, he currently owns 1.27% of Upstox. Tata initially invested in Upstox in 2016, acquiring a 1.33% stake; however, his stake was cut to 0.9% following an equity transaction in September 2022.
