racist, anti-immigrant harris signs at denver bus stops: 'kamala's illegals'

Multiple racist and anti-immigrant signs targeting Kamala Harris appeared at bus stops along Colfax Avenue in Denver and Aurora on Thursday. Regional Transportation District (RTD) officials reported that the first sign was discovered around 5 a.m. near Colfax Avenue and Oneida Street, with additional signs found at intersections with Garfield Street and Yosemite Street. Witnesses, including a resident of Congress Park, observed two women putting up the signs at one of the locations, although Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas later suggested they were likely removing the signs.

One of the signs read, “Blacks must sit at the back of the bus. Kamala’s migrants sit in the front,” while another yellow caution sign referred to “Kamala’s illegals,” mimicking old road signs used near the San Diego border until 2018, as per a report by The Denver Post. Photos of the signs were posted on an Instagram account linked to right-wing street artist Sabo, who is known for provocative political art.

Denver City Councilwoman Shontel Lewis and other city officials condemned the signs, stating they do not reflect the values of Denver. “The recent appearance of racist signs in Denver is deeply troubling,” the City Council said in a statement. “We stand with all residents in condemning these acts and reaffirm our commitment to building a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and heard.”

RTD officials worked with Denver police to remove the signs and are investigating the incidents. They also noted similar incidents at bus stops in Chicago and are coordinating with other agencies to assess the scale of the coordinated activity. The Denver City Council and local lawmakers, including Representative Jennifer Bacon, have denounced the signs.

RTD also condemned the discriminatory messages, saying there is no place for such racism or discrimination within their services or the communities they serve.
