R Ashwin had a terrific outing in the Test series against Bangladesh and he will have a massive role to play when India host New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home from October 16. Ashwin won the Player of the Series award for his stunning display against Bangladesh. India were in big trouble at 144/6 in the first innings of the series opener when Ashwin scored a brilliant hundred and along with Ravindra Jadeja (86) bailed the team out of trouble. Ashwin then picked six wickets in the second innings to lead India to a magnificent win.

Ashwin had a decent outing in the second Test as well and bagged five wickets, playing a crucial role in India’s emphatic series win. Meanwhile, Ashwin broke a plethora of records in the Test series against Bangladesh. Ashwin joined Shane Warne in the list of most five-wicket hauls. Both Ashwin and Warne are now placed second with 37 five-wicket hauls while Muttiah Muralitharan sits at the top with 67 fifers. Ashwin also surpassed Anil Kumble to become India’s leading wicket-taker in the second innings.

The Player of the Series Award was Ashwin's 11th in Test cricket, joint most alongside Muralitharan. Ashwin, however, reached the milestone quicker than Murali. Ashwin became the first player to reach the figure of 11 Player of the Series awards in less than 50 Test series. He took 42 series to claim the record.
