Currently, there are around 100 female SPG commandoes, reported India Today. These female commandoes frisk women visitors and keep a close vigil on people visiting the premises.
All About SPG:
SPG's sole responsibility is to give protection to the Prime Minister. It was formed in 1988 by an Act of the Parliament of India. The group also protects prime ministers' family members. Residing with them at their official residence.
Earlier, the SPG's mandate included protecting the prime minister's "parents, wife and children" resident anywhere in India during their term of office and for five years after leaving office. However, the Special Protection Group (Amendment) Act, 2019 reduced such mandate.
