pcb unleashes ai tool to fix issues in pakistan cricket, innovative strategy to help team reclaim lost glory

Pakistan cricket hit a new low after the team suffered a crushing 10-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test of the two-match series. The defeat came after the team's shambolic show in the T20 World Cup where they lost to USA and India to bow out of the tournament from the group stage. Pakistan also failed to make it to the semifinal of the ODI World Cup last year. The problem for Pakistan is the lack of performance from their regular players who have been a total letdown. But then Pakistan have not been brave enough to drop the underperforming players and look for new talent. Given their roots and passion for the game, without a doubt, there will be no dearth of talent in the country. Also, PSL over the years has produced many great talents, but hardly we get to see them playing for the national side.

PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi talked about surgery to the Pakistan team after a horrid show in the T20 World Cup but when the Test squad for the Bangladesh series was announced, there were no major surprises, maybe because it was a different format. The recent defeat to Bangladesh has put Mohsin Naqvi in hot soup as he was criticised by many for not living up to his words. Responding to the criticism, Naqvi said he did not have the tools to complete the surgery. He added the selectors did not have data for the players before, however, they will have the same for the Champions Cup which will help them pick a strong team.

"The problem is the selection committee has no pool to turn to from which to select players," the PCB chair said.

"I spoke of surgery because we need to fix our problems. But when we look at how to resolve them, we don't have any solid data or player pool which we can draw from. The whole system was a mess. The Champions Cup will produce great talent, and we'll have records for the games that happen. For surgery, you need all the tools to perform it," Naqvi further added.

The PCB chair's statement does not provide clarity on the type of data he is looking at because stats and records are available in Pakistan for domestic cricket and have been used in selecting squads for international series.

Naqvi added they cannot drop players unless they have better options available. The PCB chief also left many baffled after he revealed they used AI to select the squads for the Champions Cup, adding that they will now have records to see who deserves a place in the Pakistan team. The strategy could see Pakistan go through a massive transition with new faces getting a chance but without a doubt, it will help the team in the long run.

"We had a lot of players for which we didn't have records," Naqvi said. "This Cup will make domestic cricket strong, we'll have a pool of 150 players, and then the surgery we need to be done, the selection committee will do. People said 'do it all today, slit the throats of four-five players, and get rid of them'. You can't dump someone unless you have a better one to replace them.

"These 150 players that have been selected, 80% of it has been done by AI (Artificial intelligence), and 20% using humans. Nobody can challenge that. We gave about 20% weightage to our selection committee. If we replace a player with a worse one, you'll be the first to complain. We'll have records and we'll all be able to see transparently who deserves a place in the team," he said.

"The Champions Cup will end in September, and then there will be records for everyone," Naqvi said. "Anyone who isn't performing will be immediately replaced. It shouldn't come down to anyone's individual opinions and wishes," he added.
