Paris Hilton has called her Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD her “superpower”, and most mental health experts agree saying there are a few surprising benefits of the condition. ADHD, according to Harvard Health, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a person’s behaviour and can make it difficult to function in daily life.
The multi-hyphenate star – a socialite, model, singer, actress, and businesswoman has been open about her diagnosis in various interviews and even song lyrics, recently told Healthline that her ADHD helps her “see things from angles other people might not,” she said. “ADHD gives me creativity, resilience, and the ability to think outside the box — qualities I consider my greatest strengths,” Paris said while crediting the diagnosis as being the driving force behind much of her success.
“ADHD is my superpower, and I do not believe it limits your potential; it unlocks new possibilities,” she added.

According to experts, ADHD is a long-term or chronic brain condition that leads to executive dysfunction, disrupting a person’s ability to manage their own emotions, thoughts, and actions. It makes it difficult for people to manage their behaviour, pay attention, regulate their mood, stay organized, concentrate, or follow directions.
However, for the 43-year-old the condition has opened a new front to dispel the myths and misconceptions like the belief that most people that that those with it are mostly incapable of focusing,” which she says is false.
“ADHD isn’t about being lazy or unmotivated; in fact, we can be incredibly driven and productive when something interests us,” she said. “People often don’t realize how much effort it takes to manage the constant mental noise and energy that comes with ADHD. It’s exhausting at times, but it doesn’t mean we’re any less capable,” Paris added.

According to experts, ADHD can be beneficial as the disorder makes many people more energetic, spontaneous, hyperfocused, and creative, helping them to be more open and willing to try new things.
People with ADHD are also more likely to have “a different perspective on life” that can make them “inventive thinkers,” and they can become so hyper-focused on tasks they have the ability to “work at it until completion without breaking concentration,” experts were quoted by Healthline.
How common is ADHD?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 11 per cent of children in the US between the ages of 2-17 years have received an ADHD diagnosis. Worldwide, 7.2 per cent of kids and 14 per cent of adults have been diagnosed with the condition.
Experts say more boys receive an ADHD diagnosis than girls.
What causes ADHD?
Studies say scientists have been able to identify differences in the brain structure and activity of people with ADHD. The frontal lobe of the brain – responsible for planning, paying attention, and making decisions tends to reach full maturity at a later time than those of others.
In those with ADHD, directed attention skills are believed to be weaker, and automatic attention is the kind of attention they use when doing something that is interesting or engaging.
Although researchers have discovered these brain differences, they do not completely understand why they occur and lead to symptoms of ADHD. However, extensive studies have pointed towards genetics that play a vital role. According to experts, ADHD often runs in families – a child with ADHD has a one in four chance of having a parent with the condition.
