In a recent interview at Cannes Lions 2024, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati shared a humorous anecdote about her mother's first encounter with ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI chatbot. According to a report by Business Insider, Murati’s mother, curious about the technology, asked ChatGPT, “When will Mira get married?” Her sister, helping her through the interaction, humorously reminded her mother that ChatGPT is artificial intelligence, not magic.
Murati explained that the natural conversational style of ChatGPT led her mother to feel comfortable asking personal questions, which is a testament to the chatbot’s ability to mimic human interaction. ChatGPT responded in its typical manner, stating there was no public information available about Mira Murati’s personal life, and that like many public figures, she keeps her private matters out of the spotlight.
Murati, born in Albania, pursued a career in engineering and research, leading her to become a key figure in the development of groundbreaking AI models such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, and GPT-4. She has been instrumental in OpenAI's progress, and her work has helped bring AI technology into everyday use. Notably, she briefly served as OpenAI’s interim CEO during a critical period when the board ousted co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, citing a lack of confidence in his leadership.
Murati also oversaw the launch of GPT-4o, a multimodal large language model that processes text, images, and videos to generate responses.
