Bengaluru: Smondoville, a society having 1,140 apartments in Electronics City in Bengaluru, is dealing with the chaos created by online deliveries. The situation is similar in societies across Bengaluru as residents now concern over security, speeding bikes and frauds. Wandering delivery agents with no purpose, getting entry for a particular flat then showing up at another without notice, and calling residents randomly pretending to be a neighbour who needs money have worried residents.
Ram Pandey, president of the management committee at Smondoville told TOI that residents are frustrated because of the increasing noise pollution, and the danger posed by speeding bikes. “Security struggled to maintain order,” he added.
The situation was similar in Purva Palm Beach, Kothanur, which is a home to 1,170 families. A resident named Dileep Mohan stated that the number of delivery agents entering the society is close to 500 per day. Dileep added that the online deliveries, especially the one with the online model, is convenient but people are now realising that it comes at a big cost. He said there are speeding bikes in the societies, while many are driving on the footpath or on the wrong side of the road.
Too many outsiders roaming inside the society sparks security concerns, he added. Some of the residents also struggled to find a parking spot.
Stealing, Fraud and No Parking Spots
Pradeep Chenthati, MC member at Trifecta Starlight in Garudacharpalya pointed out the shoes stealing issue. He said, “Stealing new footwear kept outside the door is a growing problem. Spitting inside premises and elevators are other challenges”.

He also pointed out that delivery boys often gain entry to a building after being approved for one flat. This is only to show up at other flats unannounced. "This is especially concerning for elderly residents and women living alone," he said.
His comment was backed up by a senior resident who also has the same concerns in his society. N Ramakrishnan, the senior citizen and resident of One Bangalore West, said many delivery agents enter the complex’s premises to spend hours doing nothing inside.
Meanwhile, Ravi Sanduri, president of SMD Altezz at Kadugodi flagged a significant issue. He said there had been many instances where the delivery guy gathered information of residents from notice boards, and called them to demand money, posing as a neighbour in need.
CCTV Camera Regulation Discussion
Discussions are on to find out the ways to control such a situation. But there are several disagreements among residents across societies. While a resident suggested that door-to-door deliveries should be stopped at Nikoo Homes-1 in Bhartiya City, her idea got an instant pushback from others. They argued that they could be busy taking care of a child or an elderly parent, or in an online office meeting.
In such a scenario, Video surveillance appears to be a viable option to keep the areas secured.
