Mumbai: The city is getting ready to celebrate the last day of Ganeshotsav with many traffic diversions and road closures in place to manage the influx of processions and events. The Mumbai Coastal Road will stay open 24 hours until September 18 to facilitate seamless transport between North and South Mumbai, however authorities have encouraged the public to use local trains and BEST buses to prevent congestion, as per a FPJ report. The police expect considerable traffic, especially due to visarjan (immersion) events.
Traffic Diversions and Road Closures
The police have implemented new criteria for Railway Overbridges (ROBs), capping the number of persons crossing each bridge to 100 at a time. Processions, dancing, and the use of loudspeakers on ROBs are also prohibited to preserve safety.
While the Coastal Road will provide a convenient option for North-South travel, major roads like the Eastern Freeway, P D'Mello Road, CSMT Junction Road, and Princess Street will remain open with no restrictions. However, due to heavy visarjan activity on Tuesday, the police strongly recommend avoiding private vehicles and opting for public transport instead.
In South Mumbai (SoBo), several areas will be closed to vehicles, including Nathalal Parekh Marg, Captain Prakash Pethe Marg, and Rambhau Salgaonkar Marg in Colaba. Mahapalika Marg outside CSMT railway station will also be restricted, along with several roads in Kalbadevi such as JSS Road, Vitthalbhai Patel Road, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Road.
Areas Expected to Experience Heavy Congestion
Visarjan activities are expected to cause significant congestion in areas leading to Girgaon Chowpatty, including Girgaon, Thakurdwar, VP Road, JSS Road, and Raja Ram Mohan Roy Road in Kalbadevi. Other congested areas include Cuffe Parade, Badhwar Park in Colaba, Metro Junction near CSMT, and junctions in Bhendi Bazaar, Pydhonie, and DB Marg.
In Nagpada, heavy traffic and pedestrian congestion are expected at Agripada, Nagpada Junction, Saat Rasta Junction, and Mumbai Central Junction. Motorists are advised to use major roads like Dr. B.A. Road, Lalbaug Flyover, Sir JJ Flyover, and the Coastal Road to avoid smaller streets.
Suburban Traffic Restrictions
In Dadar, heavy traffic is anticipated at Hind Mata Junction, Bharat Mata Junction, Parel TT Junction, and Ranjit Bidhakar Chowk. Worli will also see road closures, particularly Dr. Annie Besant Road at Worli Naka and NM Joshi Marg, as the Lalbaugcha Raja procession passes through. Dadar’s Swatantraveer Savarkar Marg will be closed around Siddhivinayak Temple due to processions heading towards Shivaji Park Chowpatty.
In the suburbs, Kandivali’s Damu Anna Date Marg will have vehicle restrictions due to immersion activities at Dahanukar Wadi Immersion Pool. Borivali will see traffic closures on LT Road near Don Bosco Junction, up to Borivali Jetty Road.
Railway Overbridge Restrictions
The Mumbai traffic police have also issued guidelines for 13 Railway Overbridges (ROBs), including those at Ghatkopar, Currey Road, Byculla, Marine Lines, and Dadar Tilak ROB, limiting the number of people crossing to 100 at a time. Dancing and loudspeakers are banned on these bridges for safety purposes.
Motorists and commuters are encouraged to follow the advisories and use public transport for smooth travel during Ganeshotsav's final day.
