michael vaughan floats brilliant 'pink ball' idea to icc after bizarre rule disappoints fans in eng vs sl test

Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh questioned ICC rule after the third Test between England and Sri Lanka was stopped due to bad light. Only 44.1 overs were possible on Day 1 before umpires decided to call the day given the poor light, however, Vaughan and Waugh felt that play should have continued as the conditions were not dangerous. The fans were not happy when the players walked off the field and booed the umpires. As per ICC rule, once the play has been stopped, the match cannot resume until the umpires’ light meter reading is better than when the play was called off.

Waugh said the light was not perfect to play but it was not dangerous so the play should have continued, highlighting that fans pay a heavy amount to watch cricket and play being suspended when it could have gone on is unfair to them.

Cricket still hasn’t got the difference between dangerous and not perfect light. The light is not perfect with the red ball under lights but it’s certainly not dangerous. Play on.

Vaughan also questioned the umpire’s move to stop the play when England batters were scoring at a brisk rate. Vaughan further suggested that umpires could use a pink ball in Test matches when light is not good enough to play

“What delivery have we seen in the last 15 minutes that has been a physical threat?” Vaughan said on Test Match Special. “You go to a pink ball and carry on. Teams will have to accept they get unlucky. All these ideas, you’re not going to appease everyone. I just want to see them carry on. It’s about the public who pay to watch. Test cricket is under threat more than any format. If this was a T20 they’d be playing. I’d try anything to find a way for the paying public to get better value,” he said.

Meanwhile, England find themselves in a commanding position at stumps on Day 1. Ollie Pope redeemed himself with a brilliant unbeaten 103 to take England to 221-3.
