mermaidcore magic: the fish-cut silhouette gets celebrity approval as it makes waves in fashion

It looks like the #mermaidcore trend that emerged last year, following the release of The Little Mermaid, isn’t fading away anytime soon. Fish-cut skirts on dresses and lehengas seem to be making regular appearances at celebratory events. The release of The Little Mermaid ushered in a global craze for pearls, fishtail dresses, and anything that gave a nod to the aquatic world.

Just two days ago, Ananya Panday stepped out in a look from LaQuan Smith’s Fall 2023 ready-to-wear collection. Her dress featured a mermaid-style, cinched skirt paired with a bralette. She accessorised her outfit with Fall season's favourite trend — stacked metallic bangles. Ananya for sure has become the most stylish Gen Z celebrity and perhaps the "It Girl" of Bollywood. She closed the show for Rohit Bal, at the Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI.

Actor Kiara Advani showed up in a custom-made, fish-cut saree-lehenga embellished with beads and sequins by designer Manish Malhotra, at his Diwali party. The lehenga was cinched at the back to create a striking mermaid silhouette, though it did have mix reactions.

One of this year’s social highlights was undoubtedly the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant — the power packed event that left the world in awe. Among the high-profile guests were the Kardashian sisters, Kim and Khloe, who wore ethnic outfits by Indian designers. For one of the wedding functions, Kim wore a custom scarlet-red, pre-stitched saree with a fish-cut fit, featuring a daring blouse with a plunging neckline.

The fish-cut, or mermaid style, gets its name from its distinctive flared-out bottom, resembling a mermaid’s fin. This design accentuates the curves by hugging the waist and chest, then flaring at the bottom, creating an hourglass figure or the iconic “mermaid silhouette.” It suits various body types—women with curves can highlight them, while those with straighter figures can style it to create an hourglass effect.
