Amit Kataria, an IAS officer from the 2004 Chattisgarh cadre has an estimated net worth of Rs. 8.90 crores. His net worth is not boosted by his salary as a civil servant, but from his family’s real estate holdings which are running successfully across the national capital Delhi. A News18 report stated that these real estates generate revenue in crores for the family.
According to various media sources, Kataria is India’s richest bureaucrat. It is reported that when he started out his journey of becoming a civil servant, he used to receive Rs. 1 as his monthly salary.
He has recently come back to the state after a 7-year assignment on central deputation. Kataria, hailing from Delhi NCR, achieved the 18th position in the 2003 UPSC exam. He is an IIT alumnus and completed his schooling from Delhi Public School R.K Puram. Until recently, he served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Rural Development. Before this, he occupied numerous significant roles in Chhattisgarh, including serving as Collector in multiple districts.
This is not the first time Kataria has made headlines. During his time as the District Collector in Bastar, Kataria donned sunglasses while greeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for which the Chhattisgarh government subsequently sent him a notice on the account of not wearing "appropriate attire" and wearing sunglasses while meeting the Prime Minister of India.
