President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday tapped Brendan Carr as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. Carr is currently a Republican commissioner on the FCC.

“His current term runs through 2029 and, because of his great work, I will now be designating him as permanent Chairman,” Trump said Sunday. "Commissioner Carr is a warrior for Free Speech, and has fought against the regulatory lawfare that has stifled Americans' freedoms, and held back our economy," Trump added.

Who Is Brandon Carr?

Carr is a former general counsel of the FCC agency and is in his third term as a commissioner. Throughout his term, Carr has been a supporter of tech billionaire Elon Musk’s efforts to secure broadband internet service subsidies.

The top FCC commissioner proved to be a partisan lightning rod in the months running up to the election, consistently criticising the Biden-Harris White House management of broadband expansion subsidies.

Commissioner Carr brings over two decades of corporate and public sector expertise in communications and tech policy to his position. According to the FCC website, Carr worked as an attorney at Wiley Rein LLP before joining FCC as a staffer in 2012.

Carr graduated from Georgetown University and earned his J D magna cum laude from the Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law. He also worked as an editor of the Catholic University Law Review, the FCC website stated.

Andrew Jay Schwartzman, a public interest telecommunications lawyer said that Carr is fully qualified for the role. However he added that the FCC commissioner has carried out an "unusually public campaign " to lead the FCC.
