maharashtra dgp rashmi shukla transferred ahead of polls over opposition's allegations

Mumbai: The Election Commission on Monday ordered the transfer of Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla ahead of state assembly elections. The Opposition MVA parties had earlier demanded her transfer accusing her of framing opposition party workers in false cases and tapping the phones of opposition leaders.

The Election Commission has asked Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik to hand over Shukla's charge to the next seniormost IPS officer.

Rashmi Shukla, a 1988-batch IPS officer, took charge as the 48th DGP of Maharashtra in January this year, making her the first woman officer to head the state police.

Earlier, two FIRs were registered against Shukla on charges of allegedly recording phone calls of opposition leaders while she was the state intelligence chief. However, the two FIRs were eventually quashed by the Bombay High Court.
