Love, Sitara, starring Sobhita Dhulipala, is an upcoming slice-of-life drama set to release on Zee5 on September 27. The film delves into the complexities of relationships, featuring a talented ensemble cast, including Sonali Kulkarni in a pivotal role. In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Sonali shared insights into her character and the experience of working on the film.
Sonali Kulkarni on Love, Sitara
Discussing why she chose to be part of Love, Sitara, Sonali Kulkarni told Zoom, “I usually take some time to understand the character, I believe that the director and co-stars add a lot of emotions. But in this case, I had a beautiful cast. With Vandana’s guidance, we worked on the arc for all the characters. Hema, my character, is a well-travelled person, she isn’t restricted to her South Indian accent, but the layers of her original accent remain.”
She further elaborated on the preparation for her role, sharing, "We also had to learn a bit of Malayalam to understand the characters better. I’m very fond of B Jayashree ma’am. She played my mother in my very first film. Being her daughter again after so many years was wonderful because we’ve both experienced different seasons, ages, and projects. Reconnecting for Love Sitara was beautiful. I feel the co-actors, locations, costumes, and the land itself—all contribute to shaping the character. Filming in Kerala added so much to the experience."

When asked whether she could relate to her character, Sonali spoke about the personal connection she felt with Hema, "I love the complexity of the character because, as they say, all families are dysfunctional. The interpersonal relationships were intriguing, and I love my character – Hema. She is full of contradictions and zest. Hema is the only character in the script who has stepped out of the house and done something for herself. She’s a love-deprived child, never acknowledged for her efforts, hard work, or talent."
She concluded by explaining how she connected emotionally with Hema’s journey, "Her only desire is to be loved. I really related to that. There are so many people we see working so dedicatedly and passionately, but deep down, there’s an unloved child within them, always searching for love."
Love, Sitara is directed by Vandana Kataria, and with such heartfelt performances, the film promises to be an emotional exploration of human relationships.
