Kolkata: Following a two-hour meeting between the doctors and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her residence on Monday the state government agreed to three of five demands put forth by junior doctors. Mamata Banerjee announced that Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, deputy commissioner of Kolkata Police, North, and two senior officials of the health department would be replaced. She requested the doctors to return to work asserting the public was suffering due to flood-like conditions, dengue, and malaria outbreaks. However, the agitating doctors are yet to call of their strike.

The Supreme Court is hearing matters related to rape-murder case of doctor in Kolkata on Tuesday. In the last hearing, the apex court had directed the junior doctors to return to work by to avoid any action by the government.

Supreme Court Begins Hearing in RG Kar Rape Murder Case

  • SC adjourned hearing in Kolkata rape-murder case, says it will take up matter after a week.
  • SC asked the CBI to file status report on its probe on both murder of the deceased doctor and financial irregularities at the next hearing.
  • SC instructed the CBI to investigate the leads provided by the deceased doctor's father in a letter.
  • Senior advocate Indira Jaising said in the court that she is willing to share names of others present at crime scene to CBI in sealed cover.
  • "In the interest of maintaining the dignity of the victim, the governing principle is the identity of rape of the victim should not be disclosed," said the Supreme Court.
  • The bench told Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that it will pass order directing Wikipedia to remove name and photo of victim, after Mehta informed the court that Wikipedia is carrying photo of victim.
  • West Bengal Police told the Supreme Court that nothing related to crime, including CCTV footage, remains with them, everything handed over to CBI.
  • Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for West Bengal govt in SC, seeks stopping of live proceedings in Kolkata rape-murder case. Sibal alleged that women lawyers of chamber are facing threats of acid attack and rapes.
  • A Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud has assembled. The hearing of the case has begun. The bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud also sought a fresh status report by the CBI.

Doctors To Continue Cease Work Protest On Tuesday

Agitating junior doctors on Monday night said they would continue their ‘cease work’ and demonstration till all the promises made to them by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over their demands materialise.

Medics said after the meeting that they will continue their ‘cease work’ protest on Tuesday. The said that they will wait for the Supreme Court hearing on the Kolkata rape and murder case on Tuesday.

Key Supreme Court Hearing Today

The Supreme Court is likely to hear on Tuesday a case it has initiated on its own following the rape and murder of a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata amid the ongoing protests by doctors in West Bengal.

Kolkata Police Commissioner, Two Health Department Officials To Be Removed

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, after a two-hour-long meeting with agitating junior doctors, announced that she had agreed to three demands — removing Kolkata Police Commissioner and two health department officials, along with the removal of the chief of police of the city's north zone.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said, "We tried listening to junior doctors…we have decided to change the DC (Kolkata Police Commissioner)…he agreed to resign himself…in health department, they demanded the removal of 3 persons and we agreed for 2. We have agreed 99%, what else can we do? We have requested the junior doctors to come back to work so that the common citizens won't suffer…"
