kolkata rape-murder case: cbi lawyer arrives 50 mins late, miffed court asks 'shall i grant bail to sanjay roy'

Kolkata: Miffed over the investigating officer’s absence and the prosecutor’s delay during bail hearing of the prime accused in Kolkata Doctor’s rape and murder case Sanjay Roy, Sealdah Court expressed displeasure and asked if it should accept the bail plea filed by the suspect.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pamela Gupta on Friday emphasised the gravity of the situation and the need for more prompt action from the CBI.

Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) lawyer reached the Sealdah court 50 minutes late to oppose the bail plea of Sanjay Roy, stating that it would hamper the investigation. As they kept the court waiting, ACJM Gupta at one point asked, "Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy?"

As the lawyer was not present in the court, the magistrate asked the CBI officer to call him. The officer present in the court, who identified herself as the assistant investigating officer, stepped out of the courtroom and made a call. Upon returning, the officer said that the lawyer was on his way. "It is gross negligence on the part of CBI," said the magistrate.

A trainee doctor was raped and murdered at government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month while she was on night shift triggering nationwide protests. Her body was found in the seminar room of the college. Police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, for allegedly being involved in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.

Calcutta High Court transferred the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the second week of August saying that no significant progress was made in the case.

As protests continue, thousands of women across West Bengal are expected to turn up at the third edition of the 'Reclaim the Night' campaign on September 8 midnight to press their demand for justice.
