Kojagara Puja 2024 Date And Time: One of the most significant festivals in West Bengal, Odisha, and Assam is Kojagara Puja. It is also known as Kojagara Vrat (fast) and is popularly referred to as Sharad Purnima in various parts of the country. The term “Kojagiri” comes from ‘Kojagarti,’ which means “who is awake.”

Kojagara Puja 2024 Date:

Kojagara Puja will be celebrated on Wednesday, 16th October 2024.

A special puja dedicated to the Hindu deity, Goddess Lakshmi, is performed on this day. "During this fast, there is a tradition of keeping vigil (Jagarana) at night. According to the Kojagara Vrat story, Goddess Lakshmi visits the world on the night of Ashwin Purnima and bestows wealth and prosperity upon those devotees who remain awake on this night," states Drik Panchang.

The Kojagara fast is observed on the day of Ashwin Purnima. It is also known as Kojagari Puja and Lakshmi Puja in Bengal.

"The full moon of the Ashwin month is also called Kaumudi. Hence, one name of this fast is also Kaumudi Vrat. According to the Skanda Purana, Kojagara Vrat is the best fast, by observing which even an ordinary being attains the highest position and gains opulence, health, and children in this life and in future lives as well," states Drik Panchang.

The most auspicious day for Kojagara Puja is when the Purnima coincides with Nishith Vyapini.

Significance of Kojagara Vrat

Sage Valakhilya Rishi describes the significance (Mahatmya) of Kojagara Puja. He stated that on the Shukla Paksha Purnima of the Ashwin month, one should worship Goddess Lakshmi with devotion at night. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is pleased by drinking coconut water and playing the game of Chausar. On the night of Kojagara Puja, Goddess Lakshmi visits the earth to bless devotees who are observing the Jagarana. All devotees afflicted by poverty must observe this fast, as even a poor Brahmin named Valit became very wealthy by observing it.
