is your smartphone causing brain cancer?

Cellphones have not just made our lives easier but have also made us their slaves. From children to adults, most are hooked to their phones most of the time, prompting health experts to repeatedly issue warnings against the damage they do to your health. From causing addiction, stress, and anxiety among children, to having negative effects on your eyes and brain, there are many proven flipsides of using mobiles.

However, it is also believed that cell phones can cause brain cancer. And so, many studies have been done or are underway to find to what extent mobile phones are responsible for causing tumours. According to experts, so far, the research has found that mobile phone users are not at any greater risk of brain cancer than those who do not use phones excessively. But the risk has only been assessed for short to medium-term mobile phone use – which is for mostly kids under 10 years of age. Experts say long-term mobile phone use has yet to be fully evaluated.

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, radiation from cell phones is possibly a cancer-causing substance, but they are conducting more studies on this.

Mobile phones use radiofrequency electromagnetic energy or RFE, which is not known to damage DNA and cannot produce cancer-causing mutations. However, it has been suggested that it may increase the rate at which cancer develops. There is also concern that RFE produced by mobile phones can affect your brain because mobile phones are usually held close to the head.

Among those who have brain cancer, there is some correlation between the side of their head on which they held their mobile phone and the location of brain tumours.

Why are most studies not conclusive?

According to WebMD, research has not been able to clearly explain in detail the relation between brain cancer and mobile phones because many of them have built-in weaknesses that can affect how accurate their findings are. They include:

  • The results of studies done in animals or cells may not apply to humans
  • Most people may not have been regularly using cell phones long enough to tell if they're linked to cancer
  • Other habits besides cell phone use may affect cancer rates, but these habits were not studied
  • Most people do not always remember how much or how long they’ve done something, like using a cell phone
  • Technology in cell phones keeps changing over time, which can affect study results
  • Most studies are done in adults, which means their results may not apply to children

How can you use cell phones safely?

If you are worried that your phone may raise your risk of cancer, there are a few tips for using it safely, which include:

  • Always limit your time on the phone
  • Try using the speaker, a headset, or a hands-free device instead of holding the phone to your head
  • If possible text or WhatsApp instead of making a call
  • Always buy a mobile phone with a lower SAR, or specific absorption rate, which gives off less radiation
  • Always sleep with keeping your phone away from your body
  • Turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it to prevent your phone from being hacked
  • Turn off your phone's cellular data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth when not using them
