ipl 2025: bcci likely to allow 5 retentions per team, no right to match card at auction - report

The BCCI has yet to reveal the details of the IPL 2025 auction and the fans are eagerly waiting for a word on it. The BCCI is likely to organise a mega-auction for IPL 2025 and the franchises will only be allowed to retain a certain number of players. The team owners met the board's officials in July.

The Indian Express has reported that the IPL franchises could be allowed to retain five players each. It adds that the Right to Match (RTM) is unlikely to return during the auction. In 2022, the BCCI had allowed the franchises to retain 4 players each. There was no RTM card.

By letting the teams retain 5 players each, the BCCI will allow the franchises to retain their core. The teams can re-sign other players at the IPL auction. As far as RTM card goes, it was last used in 2018.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will enter IPL 2025 as defending champions. The franchise would be keen to retain captain Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer and three more players. Chennai Super Kings will surely retain MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and three more players if there's a mega-action.

There is no doubt over Virat Kohli's future with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and he could be their first-choice retention once again. Faf du Plessis might be back in the auction. He captained RCB from IPL 2022 to 2024.

IPL auction to take place outside India?

Cricbuzz recently reported that the IPL 2025 auction could take place outside India once again. The previous year's auction was held in Dubai in December. The IPL 2025 auction is likely to take place in November in the Middle East. It will be a two-day event if there's a mega-auction.

All eyes are on MS Dhoni going into the auction. The Indian legend hasn't broken his silence on his future and it isn't confirmed whether he will continue to play or not. Dhoni relinquished Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) captaincy before IPL 2024.
